Shortage of Engineering Skills in UK reported

There has been a growing awareness within the Scottish Engineering industry of the shortage of skilled workers available in the UK for some time now and this week the real impact of this skills shortage in the UK employment market became highly visible with BP reporting in the Sunday Telegraph that they "cannot find skilled workers".

Trevor Garlick, Head of BP's North Sea Operations, indicated in the article that they would struggle to attract enough engineers for available roles stating: "Getting hold of the right people is a real issue for us".

BBC News also focussed on BPs challenge this week providing the Scottish and UK Engineering industries with some good news when they shared research from oil and gas industry body Opito that "oil and gas companies are expected to create some 15,000 new jobs in the UK over the next five years". However the BBC also highlighted that more than half of the 114 companies included in the Opito survey named attracting appropriately skilled staff as their "number one challenge".
