An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to join a growing engineering environment where the role offers considerably more variety than a traditional CAD-based position.
This is an ideal opportunity for a practical, technically minded engineer who enjoys taking designs from initial concept through to manufacture and is equally comfortable working at a desk or getting involved directly with production and engineering activities.
The position will involve a mixture of mechanical design, manufacturing support, process improvement, tooling and customer interaction. You will have the opportunity to work on varied engineering projects and play an important role in developing new and improved products and manufacturing methods.
The Role
You will be involved in:
- Developing mechanical designs from initial concepts through to completed engineering solutions
- Producing and reviewing 3D CAD models and detailed 2D engineering drawings
- Carrying out drawing checks and ensuring designs are suitable for manufacture
- Applying appropriate dimensioning and tolerancing principles
- Designing jigs, fixtures and bespoke tooling to support manufacturing activities
- Creating manufacturing documentation, work instructions and controlled procedures
- Identifying opportunities to improve manufacturing methods, efficiency and quality
- Working closely with production and other engineering functions to resolve technical issues
- Supporting prototype and development activities
- Providing technical input throughout the transition from design into manufacture
- Communicating directly with customers and supporting engineering discussions where required
- Coordinating engineering activities and keeping projects moving towards agreed objectives
- Assisting with the implementation and improvement of engineering processes
About You
We are looking for an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer with a strong practical approach to engineering.
Ideally, you will have:
- Around 5 years' or more relevant mechanical design experience
- Strong experience using 3D CAD
- Good understanding of 2D engineering drawings
- Experience checking drawings and engineering documentation
- A sound understanding of tolerancing and design for manufacture
- Experience designing tooling, jigs or fixtures
- Experience working closely with manufacturing or production teams
- The ability to understand a problem, develop a solution and see it through into production
- Strong attention to detail
- Good communication skills and the confidence to deal with customers when required
The successful candidate will be someone who genuinely enjoys engineering and wants a varied role combining design responsibility with practical manufacturing involvement.
